Comfortable Clothing Is Best

For your first class, we recommend:

  • A t-shirt or athletic shirt
  • Sweatpants or athletic pants without zippers
  • Leggings or exercise pants are also acceptable
  • Please avoid shorts, jeans, or clothing with metal buttons or sharp accessories.

Aikido techniques involve kneeling, rolling, and partner practice, so comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement is ideal.

Do I Need a Uniform?

No.  During a trial class, just wear something you can move around in.

New students are not expected to purchase an Aikido uniform (gi) before attending their first class. We encourage beginners to experience several classes first and decide whether Aikido is right for them.

If you decide to continue training, your instructor will explain how to select an appropriate uniform.

Will I Train Barefoot?

Yes.

Traditional Aikido is practiced barefoot on clean training mats. This improves balance, allows proper foot movement, and follows long-standing dojo etiquette.

Please remove shoes before entering the mat area.

Should I Bring Anything?

Most students simply bring:

  • A bottle of water
  • A small towel if desired
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn

Jewelry such as watches, necklaces, bracelets, and rings should be removed before class for everyone's safety.

What Happens During My First Class?

Your first class is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of Aikido in a relaxed and supportive environment.

You will learn basic etiquette, simple movements, introductory techniques, and observe how students work together during partner practice. There is no pressure to perform perfectly. Everyone remembers what it was like to attend their first class.

Arrive a Few Minutes Early

We recommend arriving about 15 minutes before class begins. This allows time to meet the instructor, ask questions, complete any necessary paperwork, and become familiar with the dojo before training starts.
